"Old Father Time"
19th-century French mantel clock is a premier example of Boulle marquetry and Louis XV-style design. Manufactured in France (circa 1870–1890), the piece features the iconic technique of André-Charles Boulle, utilizing intricate brass inlays set against ebonized wood veneers with inlay (Boulle work).
The waisted case is lavishly adorned with ornate gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, including rocaille floral garlands and scrollwork. It is surmounted by a striking winged figure finial, representing Father Time (Chronos) holding a scythe and sitting atop a sphere. This timepiece epitomizes the opulent elegance of late 19th-century decorative arts.
