"Orchestra" Clock
This elegant 19th-century French portico clock, crafted circa 1870, is a premier example of Neoclassical horology from France. Often attributed to renowned makers like Societe Clusienne or A.D. Mougin, these timepieces were prized for their architectural precision and luxurious materials.
The clock features a white polished marble case supported by four majestic columns with intricate gilt bronze (ormolu) capitals and bases. A drum-head movement houses an enameled dial, often featuring delicate floral garlands and an open escapement. The decorative French musical trophy finial features a drum, lyre, cithara (guitar) and a musical score along with the bust of the conductor, symbolizing music and art. The design is completed by a decorative sunburst pendulum swinging between the pillars, epitomizing the opulence of the Napoleon III period.
