Devil Beating Time
Manufactured in France circa 1880, this rare three-piece Devil Musician clock garniture is a masterpiece of late 19th-century Gothic-revival art. Attributed to the Parisian maker Dufaud with a mechanical movement by Japy Frères, the set is crafted from patinated spelter with polychrome highlights.
The central clock features a winged figure of Mephistopheles seated on a naturalistic branch, holding a mallet and cymbal while using the enamel clock face as a drum. He is accompanied by two winged demon side pieces, one playing a lute or mandolin and the other playing a violin or fiddle. This set features intricate details, epitomizing the whimsical and macabre Victorian aesthetic.
