French Maiden Clock
Manufactured in France during the late 19th or early 20th century, this elegant mantel clock features a sculpture after the celebrated French artist Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (1841–1907).
A hallmark of the Belle Époque, the figural group depicts a reclining classical maiden accompanied by a cherub. The sculpture is typically crafted from patinated spelter and rests upon a striking base of rouge (red) or pink marble. The clock’s internal mechanical movement was often produced by established makers like Japy Frères & Cie. This piece exemplifies the luxurious, classical aesthetic dominant in Victorian-era French horology.
