Drinking Bear
The Roullet & Decamps Clockwork Drinking Bear Automaton is a rare antique mechanical toy originating from France. Manufactured by the renowned firm Roullet & Decamps in the late 1800s (circa 1870), this piece exemplifies exquisite Victorian-era craftsmanship.
The bear features a realistic fur-covered body with composition feet and a snout. Standing upright, it holds a bottle and a cup. Once the clockwork mechanism is wound and the lever pulled, the bear’s head moves in a fluid drinking motion, simulating pouring a drink and tilting its head back to swallow. During the performance, music is playing which is a bit distorted. Highly sought after by collectors, it remains a quintessential example of early automation.
