French Ormolu Box
Ornate Napoleon III period gilded bronze (ormolu) jewelry box (or casket), manufactured in France during the late 19th century (circa 1870–1880), is a masterwork of French Renaissance-inspired decorative art. It is a functional jewelry chest featuring a lid adorned with a charming figural scene of two children—a boy and a girl—opening a box. The interior is lined with sandalwood, suggesting it may have been intended as a humidor or cigar box.
The rectangular ormolu body is supported at each corner by winged dragons with clawed feet. Its exterior is intricately embossed with a dense tapestry of acanthus leaf scrolls, birds, and flowers, embodying the opulent aesthetic of French bronze craftsmanship from this historic period.
