Sistine Madonna

This porcelain plaque in an ornate frame (circa 1900) is a reproduction of the original oil painting, the Sistine Madonna. It depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ child, descending on clouds. She is flanked by Saint Sixtus and Saint Barbara, with two contemplative cherubs at the bottom. There is a backstamp "L. Grimm Porzellanmalerei Kaaden," identifying the item as a piece of porcelain hand-painted by L. Grimm in Kaaden (now Kadaň, Czech Republic).

The Sistine Madonna oil painting was commissioned by Pope Julius II around 1512 as an altarpiece. It was painted by the High Renaissance master Raphael in Italy. It is one of the most famous works of art in the world and is celebrated for its ethereal composition, emotional depth, and classical balance, characteristic of the Italian Renaissance.
