Virgin & Child

Painted in the early 16th century (circa 1516–1517) by the Italian Renaissance master Antonio da Correggio, La Zingarella (The Gypsy Girl) is a tender depiction of the Madonna and Child. Originating from Italy, this oil painting captures the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus resting during their flight into Egypt.

The work is famously named for the Madonna’s distinctive, oriental-style headdress, which contemporary viewers associated with "gypsy" attire. Mary leans protectively over the sleeping Christ Child amidst lush foliage, while a white rabbit—a symbol of purity—peers from the background, adding to the scene's intimate, serene atmosphere.
